Denver Water’s Destructive Moffat Project Delayed Another Year
Denver, CO — Today the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that it was delaying the release of the Moffat Collection System Project for another year. Previously, the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) was scheduled to be released at the beginning of 2013 — it has now been delayed until February of 2014.
“This delay is good news for the Colorado and Fraser Rivers,” said Gary Wockner of Denver-based Clean Water Action. “This project would have sucked another 18,000 acre feet of water out of those rivers up in Grand County, further degrading the rivers to subsidize and fuel sprawl and water waste around Denver.”
Controversy around the Moffat Project has increased dramatically over the past few months as “The Environmental Group” in Coal Creek Canyon has increased the scrutiny of the project. Because the project proposes to increase the height of Gross Dam by over 100 feet, nearby residents have swamped recent Boulder County Commissioner meetings, causing the Commissioners to take no action on an agreement with Denver Water.
“This delay gives us another year to organize and spread the word about this destructive project,” said Chris Garre, President of The Environmental Group. “This project should be stopped dead in its tracks — this delay gives us more time to build our case against it.”
